Fire Masks Homicide
As published in the August 1997 CSI Roundup

La Crosse Area Crime Stoppers in Wisconsin report that smoke was seen coming from a local home and fire fighters found a body inside. The death was ruled a homicide and investigators believed the fire was intentionally set to cover up the murder and burglary in the house.

La Crosse Area Crime Stoppers began publicizing the crime. It took almost two months when a call led to the identification of the driver of a car used in the burglary to the home. The tip eventually led to the arrest of two brothers on charges of first degree homicide, arson and burglary and battery. La Crosse Crime Stoppers paid out $1,000 to the tipster who helped solve the case.

In announcing the arrest, Chief of Police Edward N. Kondracki said that, "This arrest would not have been possible without the tremendous community input and especially the help of Crime Stoppers."
